My Story

I grew up in North Carolina.  I completed college at the University of New York, Albany; law school at UNC Chapel Hill and further studied Law and Management at the University of California, Berkeley.  I served a career in the military – first as a helicopter pilot and later as a JAG lawyer.  During that time, I handled cases involving national security.  I have completed continuing legal education at USC (Columbia) UNC and Duke.

I’ve been in practice in Wake County and the surrounding area for over 25 years.  The combination of seeing legal matters from the perspective of a prosecutor and as a defense attorney have prepared me well.  I have completed dozens of jury trials and hundreds of bench trials.

District Court is where there is the greatest impact on people’s day-to-day lives.  We deal with a wide range of situations, where people are often enduring the most challenging experiences of their lives.  They may be facing jail, divorce, and all the financial and emotional pressures that go with those situations.  With my breadth and depth of experience, I am in a unique position to have a positive impact on people who come through our Wake County courts.

I am the proud dad of two daughters, married to fellow attorney Stacey Phipps (an Arkansas Razorback and NCCU Eagle) and dog dad to our 7 year-old beagle, Jack. My family regularly attends a non-denominational Christian church.
